AHBIM for Wooden Built Heritage Conservation

2019

The chapter investigates the potential offered by the Building Information Modeling for the conservation of the wooden architectural heritage. Based on the architectural survey, the BIM modeling of a South Tyrolean farm was carried out, with particular attention to the aspects related to its management and maintenance. Inside the database connected to the model, information about the building has been included, which can also be used on site through the use of mobile devices. The sharing of such information within a single platform avoids risks connected to the failure or incorrect transmission of data, allowing the optimization of the management, maintenance and conservation of the archite…

Holistic Approach to the Mediterranean Architectural Heritage at risk of abandonment: the case study of Montalbano Elicona (Italy)

2022

A conceptual and methodological renewal is needed in the field of formation, transformation and management of the built environment. This need also concerns the architectural heritage, a non-renewable resource threatened by various types of risk factors, including abandonment. A similar phenomenon (intended as a lack of usage, which leaves room for improper or harmful utilization) is juxtaposed with overuse (intended as too intense and continuous a usage), which today is even more unacceptable, due to the need for social distancing as part of the containment measures of COVID-19. There is a wide and varied case history regarding abandonment, with reference to possible causes and consequence…

Ethics, Use, and Inclusion in Managing Archaeological Built Heritage: The Relationship Between Experts and Visitors/Users

2020

The main factor for the emergence of the idea of architectural heritage and the primary imperative for its conservation has been an awareness of the distance of this heritage from the present (as evident in the technological, typological, and morphological features of artifacts. This distance has established the conditions for built heritage (and, in particular, archaeological built heritage) to become something of an ivory tower: a niche field, devoted mostly to cultured people and where only specialist experts have a say. The only “legitimized relationship” between expert and “visitor” has often been a “top-down relationship, in which the expert ‘translates’ […] the site and its meanings …

Urban shrinkage became a central issue in both the scientific debate and the political agenda of several European cities. According to EUROSTAT data (2019) about 40% of European cities with more than 200000 inhabitants are losing population. A shrinkage that is more explicit in a progressive underutilization of the built heritage as well as in the concomitant increase of abandoned areas. In this controversial framework of structural mutation of the city urban policies in Europe try to decline the degrowth as a strategic opportunity to invest in green areas in order to increase urban quality and to act simultaneously on the development of local economies. With respect to the above framework this contribution focuses on the evaluation of the effects that the project of new public green spaces have generated on some sample areas on the outskirts of the city of Palermo. An urban context where according to the latest Svimez Report (2019) the phenomenon of urban shrinkage represents a constantly growing trend and on which the new Master Plan operates through a revival of interventions on environmental capital and urban green areas of the city.Settore ICAR/21 - Urbanistica
